Accessibility at Dossier
Dossier is built on the Renkara design system, and its own accessibility tests include an axe-core scan of the running app in light and dark. That scan found real contrast and focus problems on 10/29/2026; they are fixed and the rescan came back clean. Here is what Dossier supports today and what we have actually checked. We do not claim a WCAG conformance level for the product.
What Dossier supports today
Each line says what the product does, how we know, and where to look. “Not yet tested” means exactly that: we have not checked, and we do not claim it.
Keyboard operation Partly supported
Dossier has keyboard shortcuts for search, chat, plain-language summaries, and moving between sections. Tables and diagrams that scroll sideways can take keyboard focus.
Evidence
- dossier/frontend/src/hooks/useKeyboard.ts: Control or Command K focuses search, Control or Command slash toggles chat, Control or Command E toggles the plain-language view, J and K move between sections, Escape closes overlays
- dossier/frontend/src/test/accessibility-contrast.test.ts: every horizontally scrolling table or diagram has tabIndex 0, and axe-core's scrollable-region-focusable rule found none on the live app
- A keyboard-only walkthrough of every flow has not been recorded yet.
Screen reader landmarks and labels Partly supported
axe-core, which checks names, labels, roles, and landmark structure, finds no violations of any impact in Dossier's views. It has not been tested with a screen reader.
Evidence
- renkara-tools/screenshots/captures/dossier-a11y.spec.ts: axe-core 4.14.0 on 21 routes at 375 and 1440 pixels in light and dark, 84 page scans, zero violations at any impact (10/29/2026)
- dossier/frontend/src/accessibility.test.tsx: vitest-axe on the main routes in a test renderer
- The sidebar and chat panel are landmarks (aside elements with names).
Contrast in light and dark Partly supported
Text and controls in the 21 scanned views clear axe-core's contrast rules in both themes, after the 10/29/2026 fixes to small labels, accent text, and accent-filled buttons. The open chat conversation, plain-language panel, and graph detail panels were not part of that scan.
Evidence
- renkara-tools/screenshots/captures/dossier-a11y.spec.ts: the color-contrast rule, zero failures in both themes (10/29/2026); the first run found 873 failing elements
- dossier/frontend/src/test/accessibility-contrast.test.ts: the accent text shade is at least 4.5:1 on its tints, and the ink on the accent fill is at least 4.5:1, in both themes
Reduced motion Not yet tested
Dossier's interface uses the Renkara design system's motion presets, which are designed to honor the reduced-motion setting. Dossier's own tests do not check this yet.
Text resize and zoom Not yet tested
Resizing text to 200 percent has not been tested.
Mobile and touch Not supported
Dossier is a desktop tool; phone screens are out of scope in its requirements. The scan at 375 pixels found no sideways page scroll, but we have not checked that the screens are usable at that size.
No WCAG conformance level is claimed for Dossier. The checks are automated only: axe-core 4.14.0 on 21 routes at 375 and 1440 pixels in both themes, and Dossier's own unit tests. No one has audited Dossier against WCAG or tested it with a screen reader.
What does not work yet
- Dossier has not been tested with a screen reader, and no keyboard-only walkthrough is recorded.
- The claim dependency graph and cross-reference map are drawn graphics; their accessible alternatives have not been assessed.
- The scan covers 21 routes in their loaded state. Streaming chat, the plain-language panel, and graph detail panels are not scanned.
- Reduced motion and 200 percent text resize are not covered by Dossier's own tests yet.
- Dossier is not designed for phone screens.
How this site is built and checked
This site targets WCAG 2.2 level AA. That is a target we build and test toward, not a certification, and no one has audited it for conformance.
Structure
A skip link, labeled landmarks (header, navigation, main, footer), one h1 per page, and headings that do not skip levels.
Keyboard and focus
Links and buttons are native elements, so they work from the keyboard. Focus is drawn as a visible ring, and the menu closes with Escape.
Contrast
Text meets 4.5 to 1 in both the light and dark themes, checked against the stylesheet by the test suite.
Motion
Transitions and animation switch off when your system asks for reduced motion.
Small screens and zoom
Layouts hold at 375 pixels wide with no sideways scrolling, text resizes with the browser, and touch targets are at least 44 pixels.
Automated scan
Every page is scanned with axe-core at 375 and 1440 pixels in light and dark, and the checks fail on any serious or critical violation. Automated tools find only part of the problems, so this is a floor, not proof.
Images
Every product screenshot has a text description and comes in a light and a dark version that follows your theme.
Your theme choice
The theme follows your system setting until you pick one with the button in the header.
